I'm the exact opposite and here's what I did. I spent enough to get EP on AA. I then switched to spending on the Amex Delta Reserve and likely will easily make silver and I might try for gold.

If you fly AA at all, why not get some status there too? AA is my main airline but we do fly DL occasionally so I thought this was a good way to direct most of the un-bonused spending we have.
