This shows up every few months, but some answers:
- Not all VPNs are created equal. Different vendors use different underlying protocols, corporate VPNs also use some different things. Some of this is filtered, some is not. (OpenVPN on standard/nonstandard ports, L2TP, IPsec, DTLS, etc.)
- *Lots* of applications are outright filtered... sometimes, somewhere. The filtering done to the Oryx wifi is not the same as the filtering done to the general public wifi at the airport.
- Onboard wifi with QR is at least four different vendors, they all have their ups and downs, and all are filtered unequally. Some apps work on some aircraft, some don't.
- The airport wifi is well known for running out of IPs that are assigned to clients at peak hours. Especially in congested areas like bus gate areas.
- One person's experience will not be the same as another person's experience. Some just open the phone and get emails coming in and feel happy, but if you are depending on accessing Citrix or similar remote work environments then your experience will be vastly different. This is why "it works for me" is not really usable input.
- The way the filtering is done affects a lot of systems badly. For the techs, many things are filtered with a drop, not a reject, so applications and services are left hanging.

This is very close to my line of work and I there is a clear potential across the board to improve the technical experience without allowing more traffic through.
