Why silver? Silver seems like a meaningless status to me. Gold seems to be the true United sweet spot with guaranteed benefits over silver that will manifest for most travelers constantly:
- Free economy plus at booking, which is a huge benefit for seat selection over economy plus at check-in
- Free star alliance business class lounge access on international flights
- Group 1 boarding, ahead of group 2 with silver and all credit card holders
- Extra free checked bag
- 1x extra earning per dollar
If you are getting the United Club card, you are already getting most of the benefits of silver already except for choosing remaining economy plus seats at check-in.
Precisely. And for someone who travels enough to justify a United Club card Silver is hard not to earn, while Gold takes some effort for marginal benefit. And if you really want Y+ at booking, that's worth no more than $999/year. (And can be paid for with credit card funny money.)
