There is nothing nefarious going on. It really does not help to call the hotel after you make an online booking. If you turned up at the hotel, they would have found your booking which is all that matters, not how it was made and what the precise booking path was taken. Instead, be happy that the technology found you a room when the hotel was showing full which is what their agenda is, fulfil a booking request.
