I personally know 3 people (myself included) who managed to get to MM without a single OPM flight. And I m sure there are others.
However, you are 100% right, that almost all MMs and especially current elites acquire(d) their status without spending much (if anything) themselves.
And yes, in that case, status is "worth it" since you're not paying for it anyways.

That was done mostly on OPM, and I would definitely classify that as "worth it" in that case
