Probably because UA wants you to book their metal, not sharing with ANA. Or could be due to fare class pricing
Who cares about what "best" ordering means, you can decide yourself
The date I mentioned about EWR-SFO-MNL which my mother refused to take was April 28th-29th because if they did it they'll arrive May 1 from EWR departure via SFO. Had that happened to them they would have missed by aunts arriving in MNL T3 April 30th SQ916 and a KIX-MNL flight.
Then leave EWR a day earlier. Or take the direct NRT flight instead of connecting via lax. If they prefer the landing times of the ewr-lax-nrt-mnl, then they're like me, constrained by the schedule to do this two stop flight
