Chapter 1 (1964 -2005): IHG’s Entry into Japan
IHG Hotels & Resorts (then InterContinental Hotels Group) began its presence in Japan in 1964, with the Hotel Okura (
The Okura Tokyo) joining the InterContinental portfolio.
This marked the entry of an international hotel brand into Japan during a time of post-war growth.
In 1972, IHG expanded with the
Keio Plaza InterContinental Tokyo, Asia’s tallest hotel at the time.
By 1991, the
InterContinental Yokohama Grand opened, becoming a key feature of the Yokohama skyline.
Chapter 2 (2006 -2024): Partnership with ANA
In 2006, IHG formed a joint venture with ANA, Japan’s largest airline, creating IHG-ANA Hotels Group Japan.
This led to the co-branding of over 30 hotels across Japan under ANA InterContinental, ANA Crowne Plaza, ANA Holiday Inn, and ANA Holiday Inn Resort.
IHG now operates 47 hotels (over 14,000 rooms) with another 15 hotels in development.
Since 2020, IHG has introduced five new brands in Japan (Hotel Indigo, Kimpton, Holiday Inn Express, voco, and Six Senses), and plans to launch three more (Vignette Collection, Garner, and Regent) in the coming years.
Notably, five of IHG’s hotels were featured in the first MICHELIN Key Hotels Japan guide.
Chapter 3: Looking Ahead
Celebrating 60 years in Japan, IHG attributes its growth to ongoing partnerships and adapting to market changes.
It plans to continue expanding with new brands like Six Senses, Garner, Vignette Collection, and Regent over the next few years, starting with Garner’s debut in Osaka in 2024.
