Presumably the agreements allow for this as wet-leasing from a 3rd party is an expensive activity. How did BA get away with the B|Med and GB Airways franchises in the day?
Those routes were franchised and not flown by Mainline. So even though it was sold as a BA ticket, it was operated by a 3rd party carrier in GBL (GB Airways) or LAJ (BMED) and not BAW. BA neither owned nor operated the aircraft altough they came to a BA spec.
