But I cancelled/rebooked my flight that was originally booked on Capital one directly on AA.com and I am able to use the remaining credit. (AA sent a trip credit code)
However the AA credit has a lot of restrictions, it cannot be used with any non-AA flights even if booking directly on aa.com. That includes code-share flights with AA flight number but operated by for example Japan airlines.
If you have a code from AA you should be able to use it on AA.com with the above restrictions.
From my experience though when I booked in early this year the prices at Capital One travel were very similar to AA.com, only very small differences. But I'm not sure if they have changed.
I canceled on AA website, and was sent a flight credit number which starts with 00180. The number is recognized by AA website and the value of flight credit is shown, however when I try to use it to book a flight, the AA website generates a message which reads "
To redeem this ticket, contact your original booking source."
