I had successfully waitlisted the two domestic (6h+5h) "XN" booked flights for "I" prior to the two longer *A flights ticketed in "I". All was good. Then there was a schedule change which necessitated a routing change. UA was accommodating and rebooked me, replacing UA for an *A flight for t-Atl, that they left in "JN" (as was available) and did a manual ticket "even exchange" reissue. The first domestic UA flight is still in "XN".
I tried to get it waitlisted, but I was told by the agent that the system is rejecting it, and that their help desk is telling them that can't do it. That seems like it could be the case, as it is no longer a standard ('saver') ticket ("I" for business class flights, X or XN for economy), since as part of schedule change UA rebooked me into "JN" for one flight (while honoring the original fare, doing it as a manual even exchange).
Basically here, the original fare is an "I" through-fare, where the unavailable in "I" segments were in XN. But, due to sched change now there is a "JN" flight in there. Such mixed fare class (anything but standard ('saver')) tickets are not eligible for waitlisting, I understand.
Technically, the original fare should be honored for waitlisting purposes, as it was for sched change rebooking. But, it's likely to be too much of a hassle, given how hard it is to get waitlisted even in the simplest of circumstances, and esp. if here it is a case of "computer says no."
Any thoughts and comments on this? Anyone else run into a similar situation, where a schedule change and being rebooked into non-standard inventory (not I/IN or X/XN) made them unable to waitlist? Is that a true system limitation (if so, likely fruitless to pursue), or just another excuse from an agent (of which we've all heard so many when trying to get waitlisted)?
AFAIK, the X/XN requirement should only be on the flight that's being waitlisted.. in this case, it doesn't even seem like the same direction of travel. I suspect the agent is telling the truth about their system giving an issue, but the issue might just be due to record being in a weird state with the even exchange.
