Exactly. Each person's travel pattern/needs are different. One may have a family of 6 - 8 or a team of several workers travelling together several times a year. In that case, Platinum is great value. For someone who travels internationally often, then Star Alliance Gold benefits are valuable especially lounge access, express security/passport controls, and priority boarding (for overhead space).
For someone who outright buys first/business class tickets, status is not necessary (and in a way, redundant) with probably the only exception being IRROPS.
