Back then, sometimes rental cars were not allowed in Northern Ireland. I don't think any of them still do. Still highly advisable to get permission though. No cross-border fee on my Sixt rental, although I was told there'd be a charge.
It was about 25 years ago when car companies began requiring CDW coverage while Sixt was the only one that didn't. I had already checked, my credit card's CDW was still good. Then a few years later, credit card no longer covered Ireland.
