Having been on the other side of this equation for the last decade or so, I think you're basically correct. Especially in the last year, I've found Global Service status and Plus Points to have diminishing utility/value. In several instances I talked to people who scored the upgrade with very small amounts of money, while my PP upgrade languished on the waitlist.
