Booked CLT-HNL (via DFW) in Prem Economy and paid to upgrade only the return leg from HNL-DFW to Business ($300).
It is now looking like the storm will make getting out of CLT impossible tomorrow morning (7:21AM flight with 2 hour layover in DFW). I understand if I initiate the change that I lose the upgrade on the return, but what happens if I wait things out and AA cancels/delays the outbound and changes me? Right now, I can't even rebook in Premium Econ on the return if I attempt to change things so want to hold on to this flight if at all possible. Very strange policy as I'm only trying to change my outbound flight.
If the flight is delayed/cancelled and AA rebooks you then I can't imagine that would cause you to lose your paid upgrade on the return segments.
If you initiate a change, then I would just call AA and not rely on the online system, make sure an agent can confirm that your return will not be affected and you won't somehow lose the upgrade you've already paid for.
