There is indeed the possibility that it was introduced because it's cheap, the thought of which was part of the "weird aftertaste" I had while reading the news. You go further than me if you consider it a core part of its attributes.
Count me out for cheering for this kind of moves. As a paying customer, I don't like window-dressing; and I am not sure it is a good decision in the long run for the company.
Same as when KL decided to go vegetarian on their sandwiches
"to make flights more sustainable". Is is positive, CO2 wise? Strictly speaking, yes. Does it help in the grand scheme of things? No. Every time I see communications about this, I am not "happy", I am not "neutral", I am mildly annoyed. And from the other posts above, some members are very annoyed by this potential "perk-washing".
I sincerely hope this is not the case, that the perk will actually be used by plenty of Plats. And that it will end up bringing significant revenue to AF in the long run,
as every update to FB should. But then it won't be cheap at first.

I can't take credit for scarcity theory. It's not especially mine but yes, I do strongly stand by it.
There's no such thing as a free lunch and a benefit, however cheap, has a cost. I have never seen any change in a commercial offer, at fixed price, that didn't impact the financial equilibrium one way or another. And though I could see how KL sandwich enhancement could bring more leeway for something else, I don't see how this new perk can give room to
more perks in 2024. The probability of Plat getting free Wifi (as was floated around - just an example) in 2024 is lower today than it was one week ago.
