it's easy to justify, when you look at nelson to Auckland, the lowest fare class is Q on 1 or 2 flights, and H most others. On CX it would be K at the minimum

so when you price NSN-AKL-HKG-MAN it keeps going up until it can price in the domestic sector in which case you go from the cheapest fares (e.g. N class for 1048 + tax) to much more expensive classes

through in married segments, on the NZ domestic flights the cheapest is an M class (3rd most expensive) on NZ so your CX ticket will go through the roof. This is where buying tickets separately makes much more sense
