A very belated but nonetheless sincere thank you for your response. While I did end up enjoying the meal I had on the outbound flight - the vegetable quiche - you're right, there's a big difference between the choices of meals depending on the direction. I had many more options from which to choose on my way back to SFO. I chose the truffle mac and cheese, and it was delicious.
