Breakfast was not served at our pub so we decided to stop on the drive down to the Cotswolds. We entered a town to find a coffee shop and had to pass over this bridge. I did not not even think we were going to make it through the small bollards on this bridge they were so tight. While it looks beautiful, it was so tight. As we were musing whether we would fit through or not a van coming in the other direction hit it. We took our care on the other side while passing the second set.
As we know the lines would be long, we decided to head right to Diddly Squat farm shop before heading to Stow on the Wold where our hotel was for the night. We are glad we went as early as we did. The parking lot was full and the line up to get in the farm shop was two hours long just a few minutes after opening at 10 am. In the end, we decided to skip the line for the farm shop and went to the lambing shed to grab some breakfast and an early morning Hawkstone lager.
A bit of a dreary day but everyone was in a great mood. It is really in a gorgeous location.
I went with the Lager and my wife got a berry cider. Both were great. And yes, these were the earliest drinks we had on this trip. Still delicious.
We each grabbed a sausage sandwich. I had mine with brown sauce and my wife had hers plain. They were really good.
Far end of the lambing shed.
The farm shop is just as small in real life as it is in the show.
We then headed to Stow on the Wold where our hotel was for the day. We were way too early to check in, but took a quick walk around the town. Probably one of the nicest small towns I have been to, and while very touristy during the day, at night time it became a beautiful and peaceful Cotswolds town.
We had prebooked a reservation at the pub we were staying at for lunch. The food and atmosphere were amazing. I would say this place is an absolute must and if you are in Stow on the Wold, a stop even for lunch at the Kings Arms is a sure bet. I went with the braised beef cheeks with horseradish mash and fresh veg. I could have eaten two of them.
My daughter got a pasta dish and ate every single piece. And my daughter never finishes her food. I went in for a taste and almost took a fork to the hand.
The sandwich and fries option. Also delicious.
We were able to check in right after lunch and drop our bags. We knew we wanted to head over to Jeremy's pub to check out the grounds before our dinner reservation later that night. Never thought I would step in the Grand Tour Tent. Seriously the highlight of the vaction for me. He has the tent set up as a bar area and Diddly Squat Farm Shop 2. All of this is on the grounds of his pubs property which is epically beautiful. If you want to shop in the farm shop, just go to his pub location. Hawkstone on tap, the Farmers Puppy serving food, and a full farm shop with no line up. I bought some beer for my step dad, a T Shirt for me, and a pint to take out to enjoy in the sunshine.
What a gorgeous place to enjoy a beverage on vacation.
The Grand Tour tent serving a new purpose
Somehow my daughter was hungry and wanted a sausage roll. It was really good and bought from the food stand inside the tent.
Managed a quick shot of the pub sign in the day light. More to come later on from inside.
We had booked at the Kings Arms for tonight. It was a bit more pricey but just look at it. Worth every penny.
Our room was tucked away in the back and upstairs.
The back courtyard leading to the parking lot for the hotel.
We had room 7 for the night.
The room came with a single bed and a king size bed. Perfect for what we needed.
Forgive my reflection in the mirror.
We went out for another little walk and found some great little passageways throughout the town.
Stopped at the Bell for a quick beverage before dinner. Lovely little spot.
So we had known that Jeremy was opening a pub for a while. He is pretty active on Social Media and my wife follows the pub and farm. She just happened to be online when he posted that the Farmers Dog was now accepting reservations. She checked right away and was able to get us a reservation for 830 PM the night we were in town. Talk about luck.
The pub is amazing. Considering how quickly the renovation happened, it is just a gorgeous place to spend some time.
Wouldn't be his pub without something mechanical hanging from the ceiling.
Our table for the night.
We both went with the sausage, mash and local vegetable option. It was very very good. We both ended up eating every last bite.
My daughter had the soup (the full lunch and sausage roll caught up with her). She even let me have a little taste and it was very good.
For dessert I had the cheesecake of the day which came with a mixed berry compote
My wife had the apple crumble with cream.
Upstairs seating with Dart board.
We left at around 10 pm and the place was still packed. Lots of people just enjoying a beer and some snacks in the lounge area and everyone was having a great time. All I can say is, if you have the chance, stop in. You will not be dissapointed with the quality of the food or the level of service. Both were top notch.
Up next, round two with a meal and a sleep at James May's pub in Swallowcliffe.
