On A380, the J seats no longer need to be flipped over to turn into a bed... it goes flat at the touch of a button. Even on other 777-300ER and A350 cabins when you need to flip them over, the seats are wide and comfortable, far from being described as "terrible" by any means.
Well, it all depends, doesn't it? If you booked a one-way ticket, and the underlying fare is a PE Saver fare, then perhaps £1,800 is not a bad deal after all. Personally, I would not fork it out, but that's for different reasons to yours. I have flown PY long-haul on SQ multiple times, even on the longest sectors (SIN-NYC), and I would say it is fine. SQ's version of PE is miles ahead of a domestic US carrier's PE, and also of BA's for instance. Then again BR's, or NZ's is arguably better. And SQ's business class experience is lovely, even if some people like to moan about the inconvenience of having to get up to flip the seat-back over to turn it into a bed (Not on all A/C though, as
carrotjuice has pointed out). Ultimately, perhaps, if you were on the fence about it, but would not really mind spending the money on it, I would go for the upgrade if it was an overnight flight, and stay in PE if it was a daytime flight. But that's just me, YMMV.
