Just keep in mind the vast majority of the traveling public is not like people on FT ;-)
I’ve found that in practice, most people just go to the lounge the airline directs them to, even when there are better options available. (A non Delta/SkyTeam example is how people keep going to the very mediocre Admirals Club at LHR T3 when there are really nice QF and CX options in the same terminal.)
I hear you, but the layer back on top is that FT does represent a higher % of those people that will be in the D1 cabins. The average person probably does do what you say, but they're probably also not on FT as well. D1 lounges are for business class tickets only, which I imagine does more closely align w/ FT demographics.
If this was just a regular status accessible lounge, I would agree. A lot of D1 + business class travelers are pretty savvy about these kinds of things
