We also don’t mind chilling out for the day and seeing the sights nearby our hotel. But, we need to book a hotel room near the airport because we’ll need to arrive at the airport early next day (7am).
As of right now, I’m not sure which hotel to book.
The free day will also be on a Sunday and I’m not too familiar as to what places will be opened/closed on Sundays. I know the European working culture is very different than the US.

At the airport I would only consider the Hilton, you can´t bet the location. But there is not much near the hotel, you have to go to the city. Alternative would be a hotel near the main train station with good access to the airport.
The places I mentioned will be most likely open on a Sunday, only stores are closed. The places I mentioned are mostly located near by each other with exemption of Allianzarena. But I guess as an American you are not so much into soccer as Germans?
