Thanks daftboy! There were a couple in the group who had visited Japan before who maybe knew some of the "non" tourist spots and the good places to go to. Definitely agree with language barrier, although with Google Translate, everything is a bit easier nowadays!
Makes sense, always great travelling with people who know the ropes - and you're right, having an instant translator on the phone is so helpful when you don't speak or read the language!
