You would be able to claim denied boarding compensation, but that would not necessarily assist with your short term problem of not being on the desired plane.
The only advice I can give that will provide complete peace of mind is to get it renewed now.
I had a similar concern about a trip with my daughter next year, so I renewed it now, was quite surprised, had it back within 10 days, a lot shorter than the 3 weeks they said!
