3rd party check in agents and passport validity

I read one day last week of a lady who was denied boarding as she didn’t have six months remaining on her British passport for a direct flight from LGW to MCO.

Although she showed the government website and BAs own information online that her passport needed only to be valid for the duration of her trip the check in agent and their manager said that six months was their policy and that she would be denied boarding at the gate.

My daughters passport expires in March and we have trips booked for October and February to US with BA.

I know her passport is valid for those trips but if I were to encounter this situation how should I deal with it?
