On your arrival, the Tahiti Airport Model is a reasonable option. There used to be a shortcut to walk there, but the neighboring property owner blocked it. You can walk a local road up the hill, but is a bit of a stretch with luggage. If you take a taxi anyway, I would suggest to stay in downtown Papeete. We came across a local farmers market which was fun to visit.

For the return, I suggest the 7:30pm flight for a midnight connection. There is not too much to do and eat at the airport, so you will have at least 3.5h to transfer. We had a 2 hour transfer and a one hour delay, so our flight connection to United was tight. I was a bit worried that the United check in may close. However the agents seem to be aware of the delays for the flight from Bora Bora. There wasn’t a line for check in nor security, so it was all quick. There is very little to do and eat after security, it’s a large holding area. I would rather spend the extra hours on Bora Bora.
