I know little about waitlisting but am keen to learn!

Can one waitlist for a particular booking class (e.g. A) or just cabin?
Is it only for existing flexible tickets or can you do it in conjunction with a new ticket purchase?
Is there a cut-off for clearing the waitlist, or are you on hold until the very last minute?

(eg, I want to buy a F ticket but there is no availability on my prefered flight in 'A', can I waitlist even though I haven't actually purchased the ticket yet?)
