Worldtracer is an industry wide system, not specific to BA, and so it is going to have its own numbering system. When you start your BA claim you are going to end up with an 8 digit number beginning 01 and that's just to claim expenses and so on. I think it does ask for the WT number but you do end up with 2 reference numbers here. Worldtracer simply isn't real time. If your bag is found, given to a courier for delivery, it will probably say that at some point, just not immediately. A typical scenario is that a heap of bags are given to a courier, they then process them in their warehouse and send an update all at once to confirm the bag is with them. The actual handover may have been many hours before then.
