Now, about the lounge, I believe if you would have look carefully, the sealed off area feature a sign that says it;s for American Airlines First Class. At least that's what the sign was last time I was there.
In my case however, it was not the concierge who took me to the roped off area, but a lounge dragon. There were two lines to enter, and when I came with my AC J BP, They took me directly in and to the roped area.
As to the lounge itself, I find it pretty much OK actually. Food has a good selection. As to wine, yes one has to pay, but they have a good selection at a reasonable price. I would rather pay for a decent barolo or brunello (which they feature) instead of passing up on the free but undrinkable plonk that AC offers in MLLs.
But true, if one would not have access to that area, that lounge might have been quite crowded.
Now roped off area just says “Plaza Premium Reserved” I’m sure it’s open to top tier of other airlines, too, but at the time I was there it was just me. I’ll disagree with you about the quality of the lounge overall, but also won’t get into that here in order to keep the thread on topic.
Thankfully my business doesn’t take me to Rome often, but the concierge made the return experience exceptionally pleasant.
