The PreCheck program at airport security checkpoints is run by the TSA. In order for you to qualify to use the PreCheck lanes, your KTN must be included in your reservation or Passenger Name Record (with a participating airline, most do); you should add it to your frequent flyer programs profiles. The PreCheck designation will then appear on your boarding passes.

I get that but... we didn't show our boarding passes. It was passports.
There were people in front of us in the queue who just put their driving licenses into some card reader.
My point being that what was or wasn't on the boarding pass wasn't the issue.
I'm new to this and somewhat naive. I just don't understand why the same ID can't be used both ways.
