I'm a BA OWE based in the US who travels extensively on domestic AA flights, including basic economy fares. You cannot confirm a same day flight change for free, regardless of basic economy (this fee is only waived for AA/AS OWE), but you can standby for free (and in my experience, you're usually toward the top of the list).
