I have done it last year with award tickets on IB using IB avios - getting rebooked on BA without award availability in a schedule change/flight cancellation situation.

And seven years ago, on AA award DBV-MAD-LAX, IB cancelled the flight from DBV they got BA to open DBV-LHR and I flew back LHR-LAX on AA.

So it isn’t “never”.
