At SNA you have to at least stop at the Gold booth at the garage. SNA is different than many other airport locations in that there is no security gate when leaving the garage so they can't keep the keys in the vehicles. No need to check in online or at the counter, but you do at least need to go to the Gold booth in the garage because that's the only way to get a vehicle key.
