In other words, if I can't upgrade from PS to D1 at booking, it would make no sense to book into PS at all, since I'll be on the upgrade list for D1 anyway. This makes no sense to me -- I am being incentivized to spend less money.
Well there are still 2 reasons to book into PS:
1) If you don't clear, you're still in PS which is a better seat than coach for a 6 hour transcon
2) I believe you'll be higher on the upgrade list by being in paid PS over paid Main Cabin and it may be the difference between being able to clear into D1 versus riding in Main Cabin
