I'm lifetime Marriott Titanium anyways so it doesn't matter to me, but at the risk of going off-topic in the AmEx forum, Marriott Platinum gets you:
1) Lounge access (which matters to some people - they enjoy the free food and drinks)
2) Space available upgrades - and not infrequently suites depending where you stay
3) Bonus points earned
tl;dr: not all Centurion holders are independently wealthy (or would any of the status benefits matter to them) so some folks really value these things.
