If the consequences of choosing a separate fight is a long wait, then I'd personally be willing to try the 1:50 if on the same ticket.
We will be on British passports with checked bags, both flights will be on the same ticket. I assume we collect our bags at BNE and after leaving immigration go to the QF bag drop desk then get on the bus to domestic. On reflection I think I prefer the 4 hour connection to 1:50 in case of delays.
