Yes it isn't so unusual to get questions about this, rather less frequent to come across any examples of it, so I think this reflects more on human thinking than airlines' actions. Less than 1% chance, you are far more likely to miss your flight by being held up in traffic or public transport outage, or some such. It's very tempting to draw from the anecdotes when the 1% happens than from the 99% when it does not happen.
