Yes, I worded it quite carefully.
If you have booked to pick it up before midnight it doesn't matter if you have picked it up just afterwards (same with hotels).
But if you have booked to pick it up the next morning, then you need a hotel night or something to replace the car hire night, or a longer rental.
If you have booked to pick it up before midnight and you just show up in the morning saying "sorry I forgot" I'm not sure what the reaction would be.
