JimInOhio - thank you for pointing me to CBP statistics, I wasn't aware the provide the data in such a detail (I was just looking at EWR's website)

Regarding the rebooking unfortunately LH requires a rebooking fee, I would gladly pay it to save the family member some stress, but they insist on paying everything themselves and I know it is not an insignificant amount to them. Thought about paying and telling that I convinced LH to rebook for free but am afraid they will receive a bill via email and I will be caught with a (white) lie.
