AA has a fairly extensive network into DCA from throughout the eastern half of North America, so that may provide more options and an easier connection. (You could look at F into BOS, ORD, ATL, MIA, JFK etc and then AA from there).
Indeed, we have been rerouted twice from DCA - once via BOS, and once via JFK. The BOS-LHR and JFK-LHR both being on BA (note that AA doesn't do 'First' anymore).
