San Jose, California! The ‘capitol of silicon valley’ and the final destination for an eight day saga of questionable life choices – my first ever US West Coast tier point run. I booked this odyssey back in January when I was still young and naive, and if I had a time machine, I’d definitely go back and slap that January version of me, saying, “What were you thinking? Did you forget you’re mortal?”
Here’s the masterplan:
- Wednesday: NCL-LHR-EDI-LHR-DUB (Because, why not?)
- Thursday: DUB-LHR-BOS (Dublin, the beginning of many a tier point run.)
- Friday: BOS-LAX-SJC (San Jose! Finally! Oh wait, not staying here for long either.)
- Monday/Tuesday: SJC-LAX-BOS-LHR-DUS-MAD (28 hours of continuous travel. If I start hallucinating, don’t be surprised!)
- Wednesday: MAD-LHR-NCL (Crawling home and straight to bed.)
I’ve upgraded a few legs of this trip using one of my Gold Upgrade Vouchers, thereby moving my transatlantic flights into First, along with one of the two transcontinental flights. Here’s where I admit to some truly “What were you thinking?” moments in this itinerary. First, I intentionally booked different types of First cabins on my transatlantic flights to compare and contrast. And yes, I only upgraded one transcontinental leg, because I’ve never experienced American Airlines transcontinental business class so now is the time to change that.
The Monday/Tuesday leg of this journey is where things get truly brutal. I’ll be flying for 28 straight hours, with connections just long enough to dash to the nearest lounge and inhale a handful of peanuts and a glass of champagne before the next flight. Sleeping on the plane? That’s the plan, but my Fear of Missing Out will probably keep me awake, watching movies and eating tiny plates of food at 38,000 feet.
On the upside, I’ve already arranged some meet-and-greets with fellow FTers and I’m really looking forward to meeting friends new and old.
And the question asked of every Tier Point Run, how much? 1,000 TP at a fraction under £1.40/TP booked on two nested PNRs.
Wish me luck, I’m going to need it!
There has been a lot of pre-trip chatter and so if you want to skip ahead past most of it
