The WHOLE point is to be able to review the seats available BEFORE deciding to invest all the time in filling out the particulars...

SIA is the loser here. Many customers would be willing to pay MORE for preferred location. BUT, these same customers may not want to go through the hassle of filling in ALL the particulars one more time, ONLY to find out that the seating on this next itinerary is equally lousy!

United does a great job with transparency as you can see seat availability right at the opening page. (That may be among the only few things they do well vs Singapore)

C'mon Singapore... time to get more transparent. You would end up winning! Then again, with $500M+ in net profits every quarter, may be they don't need the extra revenue....
