As an aside, my wife can expense her ticket (the trip is to a conference and I'm tagging along). If she expenses the US IRS mileage rate of 67 cents/mile it will far exceed the cost of her ticket. She'll probably just expense the flight even if it's canceled to avoid any questioning.
As someone who audits/approves these things for my employer, please do not expense a flight that was refunded/you didn't take. That's fraud, even if you end up claiming less than you're otherwise entitled to, and it is so easy to detect/flag. You don't want that kind of attention. It's definitely reasonable to drive during a pilots' strike.
