With strong tailwinds, it’s often 3 hrs max in the air. Landing at ORD at 4am is a little creepy! And the “red eyes” persist for a day or two!
AA's LAX-DFW is 200 miles shorter, blocked at 3h12m. Brutal!
I much prefer a ~4pm departure, which usually means home around 1am but then I can still get 5+ hours of sleep in a real bed (an airline flat bed is not a real bed!)
That said, during summer t-storm season I avoid these as well, as they're usually delayed so home at 3-4am.
Of course with ubiquitous fast WiFi, earlier afternoon flights are a much more reasonable option than they were 5-10+ years ago.
