Note the thread title: "Buying a ticket using UR points and then cashing in ticket."
He would NOT get an AA trip credit (the "voucher") directly from AA. The refund will go back to Chase then he has a nightmarish ordeal to get back the points returned to his account, and back to square one. (As his intent is to game the system to get an AA "voucher" while AA does not issue voucher since the beginning of Pandemic... Plus recently AA changed the validity period of the credit - AAdvantage member gets one year no change from before, non AAdvantage member only gets 6 months.)
I dont know how many times it has been repeated on this forum and elsewhere, that the 1.5x or 33% discount using UR pts to book a flight (or hotel) is NOT worth the headache that entails should the reservation no longer works. It is WORSE than dealing with a real OTA like Expedia in situation like that.
