This goes without saying, you of course should always comparison shop before blindly booking a hotel on AAH (or a car on AAC).
Whether hotels or cars, the amount of miles and LP you can earn varies wildly as does the price delta between booking direct versus through AA. You just have to shop around and do the math on each and every booking you make.
