Hyatt Place Virginia Beach Oceanfront - MASTER REVIEW THREAD

I couldn’t find an existing thread for this hotel and wanted to post a review of my stay over Labor Day weekend. This hotel is about ten blocks north of the Hyatt House Virginia Beach Oceanfront which I’ve reviewed a couple of times. In short, compared to the Hyatt House, the Hyatt Place:
  • Location: Is about the same, but I think generally the further north you go at VA Beach the nicer it is, so I slightly prefer the Hyatt Place.
  • Breakfast: Forgettable at both and very similar food. Breakfast at the HP was a zoo over the long weekend.
  • Rooms: The Hyatt Place is a couple of years newer than the HH and did seem slightly nicer, but I don’t think there is a huge difference.
  • One big caveat: The HP has a couple of “city view” rooms per floor, which would not have any water view. All rooms at the HH have an ocean view.
Detailed Review

Booking and Check-in
I booked almost a year in advance and the one-bedroom suite was $399/nt with my corporate code. Although I hate paying that much for VA Beach, it is what it is and it seemed like the best option considering most of the hotels on the Oceanfront are complete garbage, and the Marriott/Cavalier are quite expensive.

I received the one-bedroom suite on the 3rd floor. No special Globalist recognition aside from the water bottles which I don’t need. I didn’t have a car so can’t comment on parking.

One-Bedroom Suite
I thought it was pretty nice for a HP and all of the rooms were generously sized. There was one (large) bathroom, a kitchen area (I don’t normally stay at HPs but was surprised to find a dishwasher and full-sized fridge in the room), living room with fold-out couch, large bedroom, and an oversized balcony with two chairs.

Everything felt fresh and clean. I especially liked the hardwood floors, the HH (and several of the other Oceanfront hotels like the Sheraton) have carpeted rooms which I find get a bit dank at the Oceanfront.

My only complaint is the thermostat in the bedroom was located right over the bed and made a mechanical click-click sound whenever it turned on, it was a bit distracting when trying to fall asleep and it woke up my wife the first night. Other than that, we slept well.

Breakfast
A complete zoo on the first day we were there, with a 10 or so minute line to get to the buffet. Things calmed down a bit the next two days but it was still very busy with virtually no seating. I don’t like the HH/HP breakfast and this was no exception. Coffee was available starting shortly after 6 and breakfast began either at 630 or 7, I can’t recall which.

Pool
I was warned at checkin that the indoor pool was “on the small side” and I’d guess it was maybe 8-10 feet square, and it’s around 3 feet deep. It looks like the size of a decent sized hot tub but they decided to make it a pool.

There is a second pool outdoors that’s more normal sized; I didn’t try it.

In Conclusion: I hate paying $400/nt to go to a Hyatt Place at VA Beach when I could be paying a similar amount for the Seabird or any number of other places, BUT it is convenient for those of us in the DC area and most of the hotels on the Oceanfront are in tough shape. I will probably be back but also wouldn’t have any qualms about returning to the HH which is where I used to stay before this opened.
