Thank you for the info, that's helpful. I previously tried to get DCA-SFO (AS) and SFO-WUH (CZ) on one ticket when AA could see both awards, and both were Saver. Nonetheless, AAdvantage wanted the additive rate of miles rather than giving the DCA-SFO leg free/discounted for paying for SFO-WUH using miles. So, the through-fare tip makes sense.
