For some, it's stupid. For others - because 1) the flight you booked really isn't the one you wanted but you booked it because its cheaper, or 2) your travel plans allow to leave earlier or force you to leave later, or 3) ???? - its a viable option.

I've actually done it once when I got done with meetings early and had about 4.5 hours to kill. I could have cooled my heels and done work at the Admirals Club. But, the option popped up and I took it without hesitation. I even was given a decent seat (MCE type).
Who would take a connecting itinerary that gets you there later over a non-stop for no compensation?
