I think being denied a suite upgrade AND a gold room upgrade would be quite stingy compared to other hotel chains and my guess is it will not happen often.
I don't know if the hotel is necessarily going to be unwilling. I just saw the fine print on the Accor website for the benefit, about the 2 adults and 2 children limit, and wondered if that would be a potential problem. So, I reached out to a manager at the hotel I know fairly well, and his initial reply was that he also saw that fine print, but said because the announcement from Accor was so new, they don't actually have a policy for that yet. He was going to present some examples like the ones I raised, to the rest of the management team, to see how they would handle that.
He did indicate that upgrading the Diamond guest proactively to a Gold room or suite might well be an option, and even something they will try to do in all situations for Diamond members. But, there could be situations where that might not work. In the example I asked about, there is a Two Bedroom Suite on every floor of the hotel, but only one on the Gold floor. If the Gold one is already booked (and it regularly is, because it's very popular, and booking it a year in advance is often needed), then obviously moving the Diamond guest to that suite wouldn't be possible. My hope is they would still grant lounge access to all suite occupants. It's the Accor benefits chart that says we wouldn't be entitled, but I would hope the hotels would be more generous than the policy states.
