Both my partner and I used to fly on KL a lot, when their dense network of regional UK feeders got us smoothly into AMS and onwards almost anywhere in the world. Pre-Covid, Schipol was a delight. I've been there lately and found things a little less reliable, but our opinion is still more favourable than FRA or MUC. Flights to Africa will be a pain, since (unusually) KL flyes southbound from AMS to JNB and CPT in the daytime and depart too early for a double connection from the remoter corners of SK's network.
I frequently use the AF flight to JNB and the KL return from CPT so I get two overnights. I usually have business in both cities though spend much more time in CPT and the late night return with KL is highly reliable. You'd need a layover in ARN regardless in your UME conundrun.
